Zufall hat in Tolkiens Universum oft eine ganz andere Bedeutung als im üblichen Gebrauch und hat
häufig eher etwas mit Schicksal/Vorherbestimmung und dem Plan von Eru Ilúvatar zu tun.
Die vier Stellen, in denen man dies erahnen kann sind folgende:
"Just chance brought me then, if chance you call it." - Tom Bombadil (Book I, Chapter 7, FotR)
"A chance-meeting, as we say in Middle-earth." - Gandalf (Appendix A, III Durin's Folk, LotR)
"In this meeting there may be more than chance; but the purpose is not clear to me, and I fear
to say too much." -
Gildor Inglorion (Book I, Chapter 3, FotR)
"You have come and are here met, in this very nick of time, by chance as it may seem. Yet it is
not so." - Elrond (Book II, Chapter II, FotR)
